Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Along the Kenya coast, fishermen and aquarium collectors have cleaned out most of the reef fish in almost every location. The only locations left with small populations of reef fish are the marine parks, but they are very small in area, poached regularly, as they are under extreme threat. Climate change is adding to the reduction in marine life and is also creating endemic poverty. Without adequate supplies of fish the fishermen must find other options to take care of their families.

Activities
We train fishermen how to conserve the marine environment and teach new fishing methods. By providing an artificial reef we will increase the fish population and provide new income generating opportunities.
Expected Outcomes
The indigenous fishing groups who have relied on the stocks of reef fish for their livelihoods, in terms of their own consumption and for sale to the local market, mainly tourist hotels, will no longer suffer due to the implementation of our program.
Project Message
We have considerably more aggressive wave action as the increasing violent weather patterns are pounding the coast and weakening the coral reefs.
