Day care for 42 children, ages 4 months to 7 years old and for 18 teenagers. Their mothers were abandoned by husbands and are the only source of income for the family. They earn income by collecting paper and cans in the street. Most have 5 children, but nowhere to leave them while they try to make money. There are many needs, but our priorities are food and acquiring kitchen appliances. The day care depends on daily donations of food for the children.

Providing nourishing meals helps early childhood development and improves opportunities for mothers to gain steady employment. Family incomes rise and infant mortality decreases. Children are in a productive environment and stay out of harm's way. |

Poverty and lack of resources is an understatement when describing the living situation in this part of Brazil. Projects such as this are literally saving the lives of children on a daily basis.
