Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Communities like Canoa Quebrada, rather than benefiting from the growth of development in the area, are often suffering as local labor is exploited and youths are encouraged into prostitution and drugs. In this region of Brazil, famous for its musical heritage, one ex-resident has returned to her roots and joined forces with locals to help set up a music program for 30 disadvantaged youths. Music, education and recreation are combined to bring joy into their lives and hope for a better future

Activities
Music program includes chorus, ensemble, music lessons. Also provided: education classes; eco-citizenship classes; library; recreational activities: sports, games, educational videos
Expected Outcomes
Whilst bringing an ongoing sense of fulfillment into children’s lives, the program also seeks to improve education levels and opportunities for income generation and advancement, whilst restoring local cultural traditions to this hard-hit community
Project Message
Most Brazilians do not have the money to access their culture, let alone pay the bills. In this kind of environment the children lose out. How are the new Gilberto Gils and Tom Jobims going to emerge?
