Project duration: Ongoing
Project's focus area: Eye Care Services

One-sixth of the world's blind live in India. Apart from cataracts, which are actively being treated, there are several other potentially blinding eye conditions that affect approximately 4 million people across the country. These diseases often require specialized attention and high-cost interventions that the poor often don’t know about and cannot afford. This project will offer free sight-restoring services to thousands in need living in southern India.

This project will provide free exams, treatment, hospitalization, outreach, and transportation services for poor patients in need of specialized eye care services. |
Aravind pioneered a hugely successful model to address the problem of cataract blindness. This current project will help catalyze and create similar service delivery models for specialized eye conditions, enabling thousands more to regain sight. |
"Aravind, with its high quality specialty services and commitment to serving the poor, is now uniquely placed to take on this challenge of effectively tackling the major eye diseases beyond cataract."
- Mr. R.D. Thulasiraj, Director, Aravind’s Capacity-Building Programs
