GlobalGiving Celebrates $100 Million Milestone

The world's first global crowdfunding platform for nonprofits, GlobalGiving.org, proves its model can work at scale

Thank You GlobalGiving Donors (Washington, DC) January 14, 2014 - GlobalGiving announced today that it reached $100 million in total donations through the charitable giving websites GlobalGiving.org and GlobalGiving.co.uk. The $100 millionth dollar was donated in the final days of 2013 and signifies an important achievement in the organization's twelve-year history, as well as an important milestone for crowdfunding, and for grassroots nonprofits providing local solutions to local problems around the world. "GlobalGiving has proven that a crowdfunding marketplace for nonprofits, individuals, and companies can work at scale," said Fran Hauser, President of Digital for Time Inc.'s Style and Entertainment Group and GlobalGiving's Board Chair.

Since its inception, GlobalGiving has provided a platform for more than 365,000 everyday philanthropists to find, fund, and follow carefully-vetted charity projects that are meaningful to them. The platform has also enabled more than 4,000 nonprofit organizations to access the technology, training, and visibility they need to raise funds for more than 9,400+ projects in 144 countries.

"Passing the $100 million mark means that thousands of community leaders who have long had good ideas about how they can change their communities now have the resources they need to do so," said Co-Founder and President, Mari Kuraishi.

"GlobalGiving was really a pioneer in the crowdfunding space," said Jean Case, CEO of the Case Foundation. "Not only has GlobalGiving been a champion of innovation in using technology for social benefit, they've also found a model that is proven to work for both donors and nonprofits."

By making it possible for local solutions to receive funding directly from leading-edge companies and everyday philanthropists, GlobalGiving has closed critical gaps in the philanthropic feedback loop. Donors no longer need to ask, "How is my money being used?" Nonprofits no longer need to ask, "How can I get funding for what I know my community needs?" And companies no longer need to wonder, "How can we support trustworthy local initiatives that align with our employee's interests and our own strategic interests?"

GlobalGiving's unique marketplace utilizes three channels (donors, global nonprofits, and corporations) to achieve its success. GlobalGiving facilitated its largest volume of donations yet in 2013, with more than 600 new organizations joining the website and receiving donations through the platform, underscoring the value that nonprofits find in partnering with GlobalGiving.

A US-based donor named Saunora made a $50 donation that tipped the scales past $100 million on GlobalGiving.org. He gave to a project called, "Help 200 Cambodian Villagers Evicted In Land-Grab," run by the International Senior Lawyers Project (ISLP). Saunora's gift will support ISLP's local Cambodian partner as they build a groundbreaking case against multinational companies on behalf of Cambodian subsistence farmers seeking fair compensation. ISLP joined GlobalGiving in November, 2013, in and raised more than $6,500 through the website in just six weeks. "We're delighted that GlobalGiving provided us this platform, which has enabled us to reach a much broader pool of global citizens," said Heather Eisenlord, Director of ISLP's Human Rights Program. Just like every organization on the GlobalGiving website, ISLP will send Saunora and their other donors quarterly updates from the field showing them how their funds have been put to work.

Throughout its first decade, GlobalGiving was generously supported by grants from funders such as the Skoll Foundation, The Omidyar Network, The Hewlett Foundation, the Kellogg Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation. Looking toward the next decade, GlobalGiving's Board Chair said, "$100 million in donations is exceptional. We're thrilled with reaching this milestone, but we're hard at work accelerating GlobalGiving's growth so that more resources can flow to local nonprofits implementing smart projects all around the world."
