Field Internship in Zambia and Malawi - Summer 2013

Conduct site visits and workshops in Zambia and Malawi for the GlobalGiving Foundation. Gain valuable in-the-field experience with GlobalGiving while having the adventure of a lifetime!

GlobalGiving is looking for a team of two passionate, motivated, and enthusiastic individuals to travel throughout Zambia and Malawi in summer of 2013 (mid-May through mid-August) to:

  • visit development projects and offer training and support to existing partners;
  • evaluate the work of partner organizations and report back to donors and GlobalGIving;
  • conduct outreach and run workshops for organizations interested in GlobalGiving;
  • and establish new and beneficial partnerships for GlobalGiving in the field.

As a field intern in Zambia and Malawi, you and your teammate will spend 8-10 weeks in the country meeting with local change makers who provide improved education in rural communities, sensitization programs to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, community dialogue to reduce poaching, and more! You will act as representatives of GlobalGiving, conducting thorough site visits of GlobalGiving's partner organizations, ranging in size, capacity, and focus. You will work closely with local organizations to identify potential for improvement in areas such as fundraising.

You will have the chance to help us spread the word about GlobalGiving in Zambia and Malawi by reaching out to organizations that are a good match for our fundraising site and organizing informational workshops.

In addition to seeing world-changing work, the In the Field Program gives you the flexibility to see the sites! Take a day or two off to go bungee jumping at Victoria Falls, kayaking in Lake Malawi, or on a wilderness safari.

Selected interns will participate in mandatory 3-week training in May and June at GlobalGiving's office in Washington, DC, where you will learn how to: conduct site visits and evaluations; analyze partners' online fundraising and areas of improvement; recognize potential for collaboration; and more. You will work closely with GlobalGiving's DC staff in preparation for your trip, planning site visits, workshops, travel, and accommodations, while gaining skills in organization and cross-cultural understanding.

Upon returning to the U.S., you will present your findings and experience to the GlobalGiving staff.

This position is unpaid and program participants are expected to fund their entire trip including airfare, travel, and accommodations. GlobalGiving will provide training, office support, travel medical insurance, a minimal stipend for communications costs, and workshop funding.

Qualifications:

  • Job and/or internship experience in international development, non-profit management, or marketing
  • Self-starters who have demonstrated the ability to work independently and in collaboration with other team members
  • Cross-cultural understanding, responsiveness, and flexibility to changing circumstances (because things are bound to go differently than expected in the field!)
  • Travel experience and knowledge of the region is strongly preferred
  • Up-beat attitude and a good sense of humor
  • Relevant language skills are a plus
  • This trip is paid for by the volunteers. As a result, volunteers should be prepared to travel and live inexpensively.

Interested? Please apply by Friday, March 22nd using this online form: https://surveyglobalgiving.wufoo.com/forms/in-the-field-program-application-summer-2013/. Email Alexis Nadin at anadin@globalgiving.org with any additional questions. We look forward to hearing from you!
