DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Position Description:

Does the challenge of building something from scratch excite you? Do you enjoy meeting new people? Do you thrive in a challenging work environment? If so, we want to hear from you! GlobalGiving is a nonprofit organization that connects social entrepreneurs and grassroots organizations with individuals, corporations and institutions that have an interest in supporting and fueling significant social impact. Since 2002, GlobalGiving has raised more than $100 million to help grassroots nonprofits in 140+ countries grow their communities of donors and volunteers. But we aren't going to settle for our success to date; we're looking to expand our reach even farther!

GlobalGiving seeks a Development Manager to work closely with the President and CFO/COO to strategize and implement a Growth Capital Initiative (GCI) for GlobalGiving that will catalyze a global marketplace of ideas, information, and money that democratizes aid and philanthropy. This is a new position suited to someone passionate about international development who would relish an opportunity to support step-function growth. The ideal candidate should love working with a broad range of people--from board members to funders to partner organizations--to see this initiative through.

Key Objectives:

  • Leverage GlobalGiving's program and relationships to help secure $15+ million in grant capital from foundations, individuals, and/or corporations to implement our ambitious plans.
  • Build and implement clear processes and a system of evaluating and reporting on gifts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prospecting and Lead Generation
    • Plan and execute strategies for research, identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects, donors and foundations.
    • Develop a rich pipeline of prospects and opportunities that total to a multiple of the GCI goal, such that funds are secured in the year prior to their anticipated spend; track and update all prospects and opportunities in pipeline.
    • Articulate and drive adherence to a clear timeline for the GCI and ensure all participants and supporters are brought into the process at the right times with the right context.
    • Develop and refine collateral for the GCI, including but not limited to a prospectus, pitch decks, pamphlets, proposals, and articles, to include a description of both our plans for the future and our past track record. Solicit input from GlobalGiving leadership, the Senior Unmarketing Manager, and the Board Development Committee to ensure messaging is informed, effective, and consistent with the GlobalGiving voice.
    • Ensure that the President and other members of the senior management team get in front of potential funders in the right timeframe and are appropriately briefed before such meetings.
    • Perform other related duties as required by management.
  • Donor Stewardship and Portfolio Management
    • Cultivate relationships with donors, including but not limited to acknowledgements and thank you notes to donors and prospects, responding to donor and prospective donor inquiries in a timely and professional manner, etc.
    • Manage the fundraising schedule of the President and others; coordinate travel, events, and other logistics related to the GCI in support of the Executive team and donor requirements.
    • Track all quantitative and qualitative ROI on gifts/investments according to GlobalGiving and donor specifications.
    • Perform other related duties as required by management.
  • Systems and Infrastructure
    • Identify and employ tools and work streams, as appropriate, to support portfolio management and task automation, ensuring reporting, maintenance, and investor support is as seamless as possible with minimal administrative tax.
    • Develop real-time reports for leadership to track all facets of the GCI plan.
    • Keep all proposals, documents, and pipeline information up-to-date.
    • Work with the Operations team to ensure all financial reports are accurate and sent to donors in a complete and timely fashion.

Required Qualifications:

  • 4+ years' progressive experience in fundraising, grant writing, individual donor cultivation, or fund development, with a proven track record of results.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, business, or finance preferred.
  • Great creativity and drive for results, coupled with sharp execution and impeccable organization, to see and drive multiple paths toward achievement of outcomes.
  • Strong marketing orientation, with a demonstrated understanding of where GlobalGiving's approach fits in the philanthropic and international development space.
  • Superb communication and interpersonal skills, a clear logical mind, and an appreciation for graphic representation of information.
  • A no-nonsense clarity about returns on investment, comfort with numbers, and a keen attention to detail, with the discipline to meet deadlines.
  • A commitment to our core values, a sense of humor, and the desire to change the world
