This project builds a Vocational Skills school in Kenya (the first of its kind in Kenya), for women and girls trapped in cycles of poverty and commercial sex work, crimes, and imprisonment. This will enable Life Bloom Services International to retrain more women in their own center than they have been able to in the last 10 years through renting out locations.
With basically no safety nets for half the Kenyan population who drop out of school, most poor women and girls who have sired children out of wedlock have found an alternative way of providing for their children through sale of sex. This places them in very vulnerable positions with very little chances of negotiating for safer sex, thus they have ended up with more children, abuse, illnesses and/or trapped deeper into poverty. The same is true for most of their children.
The school will offer skills in formal education, Salon and Beauty, Catering, Leadership, Handicraft and Tailoring, Entrepreneurship, and Computing for 2000 peer mentors in four years, who will share the skills with the peers in their natural interactions. At the school, the women will be empowered to make choices to lead more dignified lives, unleashing their power and greatness.
The completed school will give a second chance for 2000 abused women and girls in four years to learn skills that will empower them to become less vulnerable to diseases and forms of abuse by becoming self-reliant, thus ending poverty cycles. The cycle of poverty and sex work in the families will be broken. Seventy percent of the construction labor will be completed by women from the sex work industry, who will graduate as masons and supervisors as the completed school is commissioned.
